Article of the day: voter suppression is on the rise

Although we can’t be perfectly certain about this, there’s compelling evidence that part of the drop in turnout among minority voters in this election was driven by new voter ID laws in several states.  These laws are aimed at combating voter impersonation — a type of fraud which is vanishingly rare.  In practice, they make it more difficult for poor voters to exercise their constitutional rights.  The New York Times has a good overview of the rise of this type of voter suppression.
